Check GED minimum standards
There is a list of minimum GED standards that one has to have before taking a GED test. These standards include:
- One must be at least 16 years of age.
- One should not be enrolled in any high school institution.
- One must not have previously graduated from high school.
- One must meet state requirements.
Check states requirements
GED papers are offered in all states excluding West Virginia, Tennessee, New York, New Hampshire, Montana, Missouri, MaineLouisiana, Iowa and Indiana. In most states that offer GED, you must be at least 16 years of age and a state resident. The length of time you have been out of school is also considered. States continue to do as much as possible to prevent school dropouts.
GED Test Fee Amount
It varies from state to state on fee amount to take a GED test. Test takers are required to pay a fee that ranges from $50 to $100. One can also be charged $20 for a single test or $100 for all 5 tests.
Prepare for the GED test.
As with just any other exam that people sit for, you will need to prepare and understand the paper basics in order to pass the test. GED test takers are required to grasp the basic skills acquired at the high school level of education. Tested fields include:
- Language arts -> reading and writing
- Mathematics
- Social studies
- Science
Language arts tests your skills in reading and writing. This section also checks how well your grammar is looking at punctuation and word flow.
Mathematics covers basic arithmetics like addition subtraction multiplication and division, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and chart and graph analysis.
The social studies section tests the understanding of civics, geography, economics, history and government.
Science looks at your understanding of life physics and geographical sciences.

Each test takes a different time span compared to the others. For all the papers it will take you a maximum of 8 hours to complete, depending on state regulations.
Language arts has the first section of 50 questions done for 80 minutes and 45 minutes to write an essay on a given topic. Reading has 40 questions to be done in 65 minutes with scheduled breaks.
Mathematics contains 50 questions to be completed in 90 minutes with scheduled breaks
Science has 50 questions to be done in 90 minutes.
Social studies also contain a set of 50 questions to be completed in 70 minutes.
Familiarize yourself with the score system and formatting
GED questions mostly consist of multiple-choice questions. Scores for every paper range from 100 to 200 marks. In order to pass and get your diploma you will need to score above 725 meaning you should have at least 145 on every single paper you sit for.
The GED test results are available to you within the day you sit for your test.
How many attempts can you take?
Most states allow you to take up to 4 GED tests if you didn’t pass the previous one. A given period of time is given to wait for the test if you exceed your four-attempt limit depending on state requirements and regulations.
